Catch-up Race Report – Aquathon (Race 3)
This race report is from our aquathon which was held on Friday, 10th of July 2015
Fear is not a word in the vocabulary of Tralee Triathlon Club athletes who will go to great lengths to ensure that they get the necessary training done and rough water conditions definitely don’t phase them.</>
This was evident by the brave participants of the Aquathon, who faced challenging conditions in and out of the water, in the third of the Tralee Triathlon Club’s mini-series which included not one but two swims followed by a run.
In a move away from the traditional triathlon training, members got to leave their bikes at home and instead focus on their swim and run.
Swimmers took off from the beach to the first buoy and onto the third, back out of the water, a little run around the beach and back in to do the same again.
Apparently it is known as an Australian exit and yes I looked it up and its refers to coming out of the water and having a short run before entering the water again but why its called the Australian exit baffles even the internet!
After the swim which included a strong chop for the brave souls, it was a 5km route to Lighthouse village and out towards Churchill along the traditional Fenit Triathlon Route.
Not all managed the full distance but that’s what these event are all about is participation and of course what Tralee Triathlon Club is all about.
Aside from the rough sea conditions the weather conditions out of the water weren’t all that kind to participants either or to the marshals who gave up their time to support the event. Wind and rain were part and parcel of the evening but that’s just makes us all hardy and ready for battle in future triathlons.
The best part of all the events is the pizza and chips and this time around special cupcakes were passed around for Siobhan Griffin and Annie Horgan both of whom completed the Full Ironman in Austria.
