Summer Mini Tri Series : Race 1
You know it is officially Summer when the annual Tralee Triathlon Club Mini Tri series kicks off and although we didn’t have much sun on Tuesday, the summer buzz in Fenit was definitely there.
We had 19 participants in our first mini-triathlon, which can only be labelled a great success and for those that didn’t make it you are missing out on a fun evening with friends in Fenit.
The secret to the mini tri series is that it is perfect training for triathlons giving everyone the opportunity to try out their three disciplines. It doesn’t matter what your level – this is training for everyone.
Swimming is generally the triathlon discipline that gets most people and with that in mind the mini-triathlon series allows participants to swim whatever distance they can.
Beginners can swim to the first buoy, or just along the shore, or basically just get into the water and make an attempt and conquer their fears.
Tragically, swimming efforts were hampered by jellies on Tuesday, well for some of us anyway, others hit them out of the way and continued on their journey.
For the record, jellies are not helpful to triathlon training. Here’s hoping they go away!
Some made it to buoy one for the first time and what an achievement, while others managed buoy two and the rest of the gang made it to buoy three, but it was a result as everyone made it into the water, jellies and all!
The cycle was just under 14km to the Oyster Tavern and everyone put in the effort to complete the course in their best time and then it was straight off the bikes and onto the 3km run course to the back beach.
The jelly legs were there for the run – does one every get used of that feeling? But everyone completed a run despite the tired legs and it was then back to Mikes for pizza and chips – the highlight of the evening along with the biscuits shared out by Bridget.
Congrats to Bridget Moore, Maura Shortt and John O’Sullivan all of whom completed their first ever triathlon and of course congrats is due to the everyone else for their own personal achievements.
The final congratulations goes to the volunteers who shouted support, recorded the results, and ensured the safety of all 19 triathletes.
Now it’s on to the preparations for next Tuesday night’s event to see who else will become a fully fledged triathlete and of course for anyone who wants to train effectively come along and join the fun in Fenit at the Tralee Triathlon Club’s Mini Tri series.
