The Class Of 2015 – Graduation Tri Race Report
Even though we won’t be having our club race this year we had to recognise the hard work of the members who joined this year and give them a chance to set down a marker for the future. So last Wednesday we gathered for our graduation mini-tri for the class of 2015. The gods of triathlon gave us a break for once this summer, granting us a beautiful sunny evening with calm seas and only a light breeze.
There was a great atmosphere at the sign-in as we were joined by several of our newly-minted Half-Ironman athletes. As stories were swapped about the events of Dublin last weekend the participants nervously racked their bikes and zipped up their wetsuits.
For this event experienced club swimmers took to the water to act as “buddy” swimmers and provide encouragement and support to the graduates, several of whom were completing the slip to shore swim for the first time. It gave the graduates great confidence and worked out really well.
As well as being lucky with the weather we were also blessed with great support on the evening with numerous and vocal supporters cheering on the graduates.
Great credit goes to the graduates who swam, cycled and ran like seasoned triathletes. Many could barely swim a full length of the pool at the start of the year, and had never been out of their depth in the open water. Some had never run a 5K before and had not been on a bike since childhood.
Judging by the slightly nervous looks on the faces of our new Half-Ironman finishers as their sized up the next wave of competition, we can expect great things from the class of 2015.
