Me Do a Triathlon? Yes I did!

Read her story here….

My first experience of a triathlon was three years ago watching on the sidelines. My sister was participating in her first triathlon. I was cheering the athletes as they passed and taking their photo. Swimming is my strongest discipline, but I couldn’t run or haven’t been on a bike in years. At that point, I never dreamed that I would ever be able to participate myself.

The following two years my dad and I decided to compete as a relay team. I swam and he did the cycle and run. As I emerged from the water after the 750m swim I couldn’t wait to pass over the timing chip. My part was over.

This year Tralee Triathlon Club introduced the “Try –A-Tri”. I went to an information evening at the start of the season. The members were very encouraging and helpful. I decided to sign up and went training with the club. Step 1: Get a bike, I fixed up my sisters old bike and was on the road. I meet up with the club for training. We met outside Manor West Hotel and headed out the Castleisland road. The other members were very patient and encouraging. I was confident with the swim, but I still went to Fenit for the open water training. The instructor was fantastic and helped me improve my technique. I can’t run with my knee so I walked. After training all summer, I was confident to take on the challenge.

Triathlon day came. I was nervous, but excited. Waiting around to start was the worst for me. As I had been to triathlons before I knew how the transition area worked, so I was happy out with that. The briefing was informative and to the point.

The Sprint triathletes took to the water first. Then it was our turn. I took my place with the other try-a-tri participants. From previous experience I left the front group off to avoid the kicking and splashes. I swam to the buoy, swam around and felt good. I came out of the water with a smile on my face. Into transition, off with the tri suit, on with the shoes, helmet and off I go. When I got to the turnaround point on the cycle, I felt so tired, but confident. The whole way around the route were spectators and other members giving encouragement and support. I made it back to transition again. I went on my walk.vickey

Even though I was going out as many were finishing I didn’t care.
My goal was to finish. As I crossed the finish line I felt so proud. I knew then, it would be the first of many. Once you complete your first triathlon, you will be hooked. If you are thinking, I’d love to do one, but wouldn’t be able, well think again. If I can finish one, anyone can. Just believe in yourself.
